Brian Howes is Assistant Secondary Principal of the Year
November 1, 2017 Brian Howes, assistant principal at Dubuque Senior School, is the 2017-18 Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year as named by School Administrators of Iowa. “Brian serves as an example of the best that Iowa offers in school leadership. Most noteworthy is his humility, as he always credits accomplishments as being part of a team effort. Brian’s entire focus is on continuously improving the learning opportunities for the students at Dubuque Senior High School; they are fortunate to have such a talented, dedicated leader,” expressed SAI Executive Director Roark Horn. Recipients are selected using the Iowa Standards for School Leaders, which focus on a vision of learning; “I am both honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Howes. “While this may be an individual award, I share it with our entire administrative team as a testament to the great things happening at Dubuque Senior High School—all built on our core values of respect, engagement and integrity.” A committee of Iowa assistant principals selected Howes for the award. He will be recognized at a State Capitol ceremony in May 2018 and at SAI's Annual Conference August 8, 2018. As Iowa’s recipient, Howes is a candidate for National Assistant Principal of the Year, an award sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He will have an opportunity to attend the organization’s national conference and be recognized at the event. Howes has served as an assistant principal at Dubuque Senior since 2010. He began his career teaching science at Garnavillo Community School District. Howes has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry teaching, his master’s degree in science education and his principal’s certification—all from the University of Northern Iowa.
