Iowa Middle Level Principal of the Year Leads Cedar Rapids School
March 7, 2016 Autumn Pino, principal of Roosevelt Middle School in Cedar Rapids, has been named the 2016 Iowa Middle Level Principal of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa. SAI Executive Director Roark Horn remarked, “I am excited that Ms. Pino has been selected Iowa's Middle School Principal of the Year, earning this honor from a very competitive field of applicants. I have had the great pleasure of watching Autumn work directly with her staff and students this year and feel that she provides an excellent example of how effective school administrators can be when they have the opportunity to lead and serve.” Pino expressed, “It is very humbling to be the recipient of this award, and I am honored to provide positive recognition for the Cedar Rapids Community School District and Roosevelt Middle School. This award is a tribute to our teachers and staff who demonstrate a commitment to engaging in best practice work and their contributions to a community dedicated to empowering students to see all that is possible. Collectively, we celebrate diversity and inclusion, foster innovation, and embrace a growth mindset. “It is with gratitude that I serve the Roosevelt community; it has afforded me the opportunity to share my love for middle level education and my passion for our students that inspire me on a daily basis. Let it be known to the world that Roosevelt students have grit, intelligence, perspective, spunk and a valuable lens to share with the world. I am fortunate enough to be challenged to be a better educator because I work with Roosevelt students every day, and that to me, is the most powerful award of all,” the school leader added. Pino has served as Roosevelt principal since 2011, was previously an associate principal at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf and prior to that principal of Maquoketa Middle School in Maquoketa. Her education career began as a special education teacher at Prairie Middle School in the College Community School District. She received her bachelor's degree in special education and a master's degree in educational leadership from Loras College. A committee of Iowa middle level principals selected Pino, and she will be recognized at an awards ceremony at the State Capitol in May.
