Okoboji's Downing is Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year

Brian Downing, principal of Okoboji High School, has been named the 2021 Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa.

“Congratulations to Brian Downing for being selected by his peers for this award! In addition to the many innovations he has led in his district, Brian has been a leader in the state in key areas such as the use of technology in education and the importance of leading from an ethical perspective. He exemplifies what school leaders can do to influence and inspire others,” said SAI Executive Director Roark Horn.

In his time with the district, Downing has worked extensively in curriculum alignment, technology integration, and communication and outreach. The school has experienced growth in the areas of STEM, Work-Based Learning and Project-Based Learning. He also shares his expertise by presenting at conferences both within and outside the state.

Downing expressed, “I am very grateful to SAI for the work they do day in and day out to support administrators and the schools they serve. I am blessed to work with the most outstanding administrative team and staff I could ever hope to find and look forward to continuing to work alongside them to support and serve the students and families of the Okoboji Community School District.”

He has been a principal at Okoboji since 2010 and previously served as secondary principal at Lisbon Community School District. He received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and earned his master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Northern Iowa.

A committee of Iowa high school principals selected Downing, and he will be recognized at the association’s Annual Conference in August.
