Ryan Davis Named Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year

Vinton-Shellsburg Educator Selected Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year

Ryan Davis, assistant principal at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, is the 2013-14 Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year as named by School Administrators of Iowa.

“As an educational leader, Ryan Davis has a commitment to all students’ success which is apparent not only in his efforts with at-risk students, but also through his work in providing teacher learning,“ said SAI Executive Director Dan Smith.

Recipients are selected using the Iowa Standards for School Leaders, which focus on

  • a vision of learning;
  • the presence of a school culture and instructional program that is beneficial to student learning and staff professional development;
  • a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment;
  • work with parents and the community;
  • fairness, integrity and ethics; and
  • an understanding of the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context in which we operate.

Upon learning of his selection, Davis expressed, “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by my colleagues with this award, representing all of the great work done by assistant principals across the state of Iowa.  I really view this as an honor for the Vinton-Shellsburg School District and communities, as we have collectively worked together to do what is right for students both in education and in life.  I am fortunate to have a school board and administrative team that puts students first in all decisions, a staff that embraces change and thinking outside the box to improve education, and a community that supports and walks beside our district in our efforts to educate our youth.  But most importantly, I’m thankful for the Vinton-Shellsburg students that make this work meaningful, enjoyable and truly an honor.”

A committee of Iowa assistant principals selected Davis for the award. He will be recognized at a State Capitol ceremony in May 2014 and at SAI's Annual Conference August 6, 2014. As Iowa’s recipient, Davis is now a candidate for National Assistant Principal of the Year, an award sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and Virco, Inc. He will have an opportunity to attend a recognition program in Washington, D.C., in the spring featuring professional development and networking activities with peers from around the nation.

Davis began his career as a grades 7-12 science teacher at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (Minn.) Community School District. He came to Vinton in 2008 as high school assistant principal and at-risk coordinator. He has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Northern Iowa; a master’s degree in educational leadership from Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn.; and his certificate in education administration from Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minn.
