SAI Names Assistant Elementary Principal of the YearApril 18, 2017 Angela Holcomb of Perry Creek Elementary School in Sioux City is the recipient of the 2017 Iowa Assistant Elementary Principal of the Year award from the School Administrators of Iowa. Holcomb expressed, “I am very humbled and honored by this award. My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a passion for helping others, which started me on my path in education. I have been blessed during my career to work with amazing professionals who have believed in me and have helped to shape me into the leader I am today. Perry Creek Elementary welcomed me into their family with open arms. I am thankful every day to our students, parents and colleagues for allowing me into their lives, for letting me take risks and try new things, for letting me make mistakes and for putting their trust in me. Our staff is committed to meeting the needs of all our students. Their relentless dedication and focus on the whole child inspire me every day.” “Congratulations go out to Dr. Holcomb for earning Iowa’s highest honor for assistant elementary principals! She truly understands the direct impact that assistant principals can have on staff professional learning and student achievement, and exemplifies how a district’s commitment to having a top-level leader in that role can be powerful,” said Roark Horn, SAI executive director. Holcomb has been assistant principal since 2014 and was previously a regional director with Heartland Area Education Agency in Johnston. She began her career as a special education teacher in the West Des Moines Community School district. Her education includes a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista College, and a master’s, specialist’s and doctorate from Drake University. She was nominated by and selected for the award by a committee of her peers and will be honored in May at an awards ceremony at the state capitol.
