October 20, 2014 Safe Schools Tips America’s Safe Schools week was held October 20-24, 2014. In recognition of the week, the Iowa School Safety Coalition released a new bulletin each day.
“We have to work together in our communities and as a state to keep Iowa’s students and schools safe. Part of that is providing school leaders the expertise they need to put in place quality safety plans, which will help schools prepare for, and respond to, threats to facilities, students and staff members. The Iowa Department of Education is committed to helping schools provide a safe learning environment,” Brad Buck, director of the Iowa Department of Education, said. The Iowa School Safety Coalition was created to assist schools in preparing for, mitigating, responding to and recovering from natural and man-made threats and incidents. The group is made up of representatives from state agencies and education organizations, including Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Iowa State Fire Marshal, Iowa Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center, Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Emergency Management Association, Des Moines Police Department, Iowa State Education Association, Iowa Association of School Boards, School Administrators of Iowa, American Institute of Architects – Iowa Chapter and EMC Insurance Companies. “Iowa schools are not immune to natural and man-made threats. As responsible communities, we need to be prepared to prevent, respond and recover from these events,” A.J. Mumm, director of the Polk County Emergency Management Agency, said. Significant progress is being made to ensure that all of our nation’s schools are safe, secure and productive. At the forefront of this movement are hundreds of exemplary school district, state and national programs. School safety includes keeping campuses free of crime and violence, improving discipline and increasing student attendance. Schools that are safe and free of violence are necessary to ensure the well-being of all children and the quality of their education. “The National School Safety Center helped to organize Safe Schools Week with the intent to celebrate the efforts of safety programs and advocate for continued improvements. School board members can play an important role in helping to build awareness among students, parents and community residents,” Jeff Anderson, president of the Iowa Association of School Boards and president of the Boone school board, said.
