Sheldon Principal Selected for State AwardMarch 30, 2017 Cindy Barwick, principal of Sheldon Middle School, has been named the 2017 Iowa Middle Level Principal of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa. SAI Executive Director Roark Horn remarked, “Iowa is fortunate to have such a great representative for Middle Level Principal of the Year as Cindy Barwick. The efforts she has made over time to work with staff and students to create an amazing climate of learning in her building is a model for all of us in educational leadership.” Barwick expressed, “I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition. It is truly a tribute to the staff at Sheldon Middle School who work diligently to meet individual student needs and encourage student achievement, all the while being cognizant and respectful of the social and emotional changes our students experience. It’s also a tribute to the student body for which I have the honor of serving. Middle level education is one full of joy, rewards, and challenges; I am proud to be able to work with SMS students on a daily basis and to be able to form relationships with them that allow us to make strides in achievement while also maintaining a respectful, enjoyable, fun school environment. It is my honor to serve the citizens of Sheldon, and I am thankful on a daily basis to be a part of this community, this staff, and this school.” Sheldon principal since 2001, Barwick previously taught at the elementary and middle level in Decorah. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Iowa State University. She also holds her specialist’s degree from the University of South Dakota.
