Tom Lane, superintendent of the Carlisle Community School District, has been named the 2012-13 Iowa Superintendent of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa.
SAI Executive Director Dan Smith stated, “Tom Lane is an exemplary leader who has worked with his community to build a five-year vision for teaching and learning. The district’s improved student learning efforts include, a summer reading program established to assist struggling readers, and the creation of the DMACC Career Academy for Warren County providing additional programming to juniors and seniors beginning fall of 2013. Moreover, Lane gives back to the profession by supporting and mentoring his colleagues.”
Lane has been superintendent of the Carlisle district since 2003. He previously served as elementary principal there, and began his education career as a social studies teacher. A graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s in counselor education, Lane earned his administrative certification, specialist’s degree and doctorate in education leadership from Drake University.
Superintendent Lane shared these words upon receiving the award, "Things like this are flattering. It shows the progress we've made as a district and all the partners we have had. I'm thrilled with the success of our district."
He was nominated by his peers and selected for the award by a committee of Iowa superintendents. Lane will be honored at a governor’s awards ceremony in late spring and at SAI’s awards banquet next August. He will also represent Iowa in the National Superintendent of the Year Program, sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators.
