Urbandale Educator Receives Recognition for Leadership
April 18, 2019 Mark Lane, associate superintendent of human relations and operations for the Urbandale Community School District, has been named Iowa’s 2019 Central Office Administrator of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa. “I am honored and humbled to be named SAI Central Office Administrator of the Year. I truly believe this honor is a reflection of the dedicated and passionate people serving Urbandale Community School District each and every day. The UCSD team lives our mission of Teaching All, Reaching All through a commitment to systems thinking, continual improvement, and a culture of collaboration. I am especially proud to represent the thousands of professionals who work in support service roles in public school districts across Iowa. We can only meet our students’ learning needs when our entire system excels, and I am blessed to work with amazing support and operations employees. Thank you to School Administrators of Iowa for this opportunity to represent our profession,” Lane expressed. Roark Horn, SAI executive director, said, “Mark not only provides outstanding leadership in his district, but also serves others throughout the state. His expertise in maximizing systems has helped many examine their decision-making processes and rethink them in positive ways. His ‘we are all in this together’ approach is exactly what we need in education.” Lane previously served as an elementary principal in the Urbandale district. He began his career as a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher. His education includes a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Morningside College, master’s degrees in counseling and educational leadership from Drake University, a superintendent’s certification from the University of Northern Iowa, and he’s currently pursuing his doctorate of education at Drake. He was nominated by his peers, selected for the award by a committee of Iowa central office administrators and will be honored in May at a governor’s awards ceremony in May and the association’s annual conference in July.
