Washington Educator Receives Recognition for Educational Leadership
April 28, 2015 Veta Thode, curriculum director for the Washington Community School District, has been named the 2015 Iowa Central Office Administrator of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa. “I attribute the success of Washington Community Schools to the tenacious and dedicated administrative team, the phenomenal teachers and support staff who go above and beyond, the students who remind us daily why we went into this worthy profession and the active parental and community support. I accept this tremendous honor on behalf of the work that has been done collaboratively in our district. We, as a district, will continue to challenge ourselves to focus on student success in all aspects of their lives,” Thode emphasized. “Veta Thode plays a key role in many district improvements. She’s been instrumental in establishing Professional Learning Communities, which help staff work together throughout the year to improve teaching and learning. She’s a valued source of information for all staff by providing resources to new and veteran teachers. Additionally, she has worked to develop more supports for English language learners,” said Dan Smith, SAI executive director. Thode previously served as the district’s high school assistant principal from 2006-2008. She began her career as an elementary teacher in the Ottumwa Community School District. Her education includes a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in elementary counseling, both from Northeast Missouri State University and K-12 administrative certification from The University of Iowa. She was nominated by her peers, selected for the award by a committee of Iowa central office administrators and will be honored May 7 at an awards ceremony at the state Capitol.
