Williamsburg Leader is Iowa Secondary Principal of the YearMarch 16, 2017 Lynell O’Connor, principal of Williamsburg Junior-Senior High School, has been named the 2017 Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year by School Administrators of Iowa. “I’ve had the opportunity to visit Lynell O’Connor at the school and see the great work she does on a daily basis,” said SAI Executive Director Roark Horn. “Her accomplishments are an inspiration to her students, staff and the whole learning community at Williamsburg,” Horn added. O’Connor expressed, “I consider it an honor to be recognized among the great secondary principals in the state of Iowa. It is a privilege to work in a district and community with a collective commitment to student success. It should be no secret that this award is truly a result of the hard work of all staff members in the Williamsburg School District. Their passion and willingness to commit to student success through Professional Learning Communities and student-focused classrooms is invaluable to our awesome students and community. I would also like to commend the work of the leaders with whom I’ve worked throughout my entire school experience. They have played a tremendous part in who I am today as a leader.” She has led Williamsburg Junior-Senior High School since 2007 and was previously the assistant principal. Her education career began as a junior high math and elementary talented and gifted teacher in Keota Community School District. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with an emphasis in middle school from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Drake University. Her peers nominated her and a committee of Iowa secondary principals selected her as the recipient. She will be recognized at a governor’s awards ceremony in May and the association’s Annual Conference in August.
