Event Details

Join SAI Legal Services Director Matt Carver and administrator colleagues as he covers pertinent Iowa Code, regulations and decisions relating to common school technology issues, as well as school attendance and truancy. Participants will work through a series of scenarios with other colleagues to better understand each area of the law and what actions are best practice.

School Technology
  • What authority and duty do school administrators have to take action when students bully or harass other students or staff on school or personal technology?
  • How does Iowa’s public records law affect school employee use of school and personal technology?
  • What authority do administrators have regarding community member and staff postings on social media?
  • What are some technology considerations regarding school safety and your district’s preparedness plans (e.g., use of surveillance cameras)?
  • What restrictions may districts place on audio and video recordings of parent/guardian meetings with staff members?
  • What communications do Iowa courts consider a threat on social media or through other technology?
Attendance and Truancy
  • What options do school officials have at their disposal when compulsory age students are truant?
  • When are adults responsible for student absences?
  • What actions may and must administrators take when elementary students are truant, and at what age do the truancy laws begin?
  • What actions may school officials take when students above the compulsory attendance age are absent?
  • What are some best practices relating to Iowa student attendance policies?
  • When must school officials excuse students from school and what documentation may be required?
