Grasping Iowa’s Evolving Attendance, Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy Laws
Iowa’s attendance and truancy laws and guidance have seen more changes in the last two years than occurred during the prior two decades. Join SAI’s Matt Carver and colleagues from around the state, as we cover many of the pressing questions and scenarios facing Iowa school administrators over this important topic.
- When may students be considered “present"?
- What are the expectations for school officials as they implement the new attendance exemptions (e.g., military absences, religious instruction, etc.)?
- What documentation may educators require if a student is absent and who may excuse students?
- How have the notification and school engagement meeting processes changed, and when should schools involve the county attorney or a student’s parents/guardians?
Child Custody Issues and Iowa Schools
- What standard should educators use to make a decision if parents with joint legal custody disagree on a topic regarding their child?
- Who and when do parents or other related parties have access to students and student records?
- When should school administrators involve outside agencies if there is a dispute?
- How are administrators to decide student residency if a student spends half their time between two parents?
