Two-Part Series: Single Registration

This year, we’ve updated the Legal Labs format. The virtual sessions will be split across two days, running two and a half hours each.

  • Session 1: Oct. 15 from 9-11:30 a.m.
  • Session 2: Oct. 20 from 9-11:30 a.m.

Oct. 15 — Session 1: Navigating SF 2428 Implementation & Student Discipline

Participants will process scenario-based exercises addressing SF 2428 compliance across K–5 and 6–12 grade levels. Discussions will focus on differentiating between nonviolent and violent disruptions, navigating the boundary between teacher authority and administrative discretion, and understanding the role of the building Oversight Review Committee (ORC).

Scenarios will also examine critical status considerations, including general education, 504 plans, and IEP procedural safeguards. The session concludes with the latest Iowa Department of Education guidance and practical instruction on ORC policy requirements, student removal protocols, mandatory notices/meetings, teacher/employee leave considerations, and lawful return-to-classroom procedures.   

Oct. 20 — Session 2: Student Records, Custody Disputes, and Enrollment Mandates
Participants will work through real-world scenarios covering high-conflict custody disputes, student enrollment/residency rules, FERPA compliance/student record access, and educational rights under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Special emphasis will be placed on navigating competing parental/guardian claims and defining the precise legal authority of school personnel during disputes.
Following small-group scenario analysis, the presenter will review foundational state and federal legal frameworks governing child custody, student records, and enrollment obligations.

Registration fee: $125 for SAI members, $250 for non-members. All participants are required to register.

Cancellation/refund policy: Registrants are responsible for full payment unless cancellation is received at least three business days in advance of the event. Email SAI or call 515-267-1115 to let us know if you're unable to attend.
