Nigel Horton, elementary principal with the Griswold Community School District, has been named the 2026 Elementary School Principal of the Year by School Administrators of Iowa (SAI).

“Congratulations to Nigel! Nigel leads with a deep belief in students and an unwavering commitment to helping others grow. He models the kind of servant leadership that strengthens schools, supports colleagues, and keeps the focus where it belongs—on doing what is best for kids,” said SAI Executive Director Dr. Lisa Remy.

Horton has been the principal at Griswold Elementary since 2014. Before accepting an administrative role, he taught fourth grade for the Treynor Community School District. His teaching experience also includes special education work at College View Elementary and Carter Lake Elementary.

A Buena Vista University graduate, Horton received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He subsequently earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Doane University.

2025 award recipient Jayme Braida chaired the committee and shared why they believed Horton was deserving of this recognition. “Nigel brings an exceptional balance of strong systems leadership and a deep commitment to people. His humility, dedication to students and passion for making a difference make him a deserving recipient of this honor,” she said.

One reference letter described Horton’s growth mindset, which inspires others:

“Of all the administrators I’ve worked with throughout my career, he has by far challenged me the most. He consistently seeks growth not only for himself but for everyone around him. His leadership has pushed me to grow professionally and become both a stronger educator and a more confident leader. {In addition}, his vision for an inclusive, relationship-driven, and high-achieving school has not only elevated the standards of education in Griswold but has left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.”

Reflecting on the recognition, Horton said, “It’s an honor to represent Griswold, a place where the board, staff and community work so hard to make this a great place for kids. A special thanks to Mr. Dave Henrichs for his leadership and to the Griswold staff and teachers for everything they do—they truly are the people who make it happen each and every day for our kids!”

Iowa’s Administrator of the Year award recipients will be honored at the SAI Annual Conference in August 2026.
